All about Mounjaro

The latest innovation in medical weight loss

What is Mounjaro?

expand iconshrink icon

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is an advanced medication for weight management. It activates two key hormone receptors – GIP and GLP-1 – reducing appetite, food intake, body fat, and body weight. This unique approach makes Mounjaro a great option in weight loss treatment strategies.

In contrast, Wegovy and Ozempic only work on GLP-1 receptors.

How effective are GIPs for weight loss?

expand iconshrink icon

There have been a number of clinical trials on the results of GIP which outperform other GLP-1 medications.

One study found an average of 19.5% body weight loss in patients on GIP after 52 weeks, compared to average patients on semaglutide who lost an average of 13.8% body weight over the same number of weeks.

Is it more effective than other weight loss medications?

expand iconshrink icon

GIPs work in a similar way to other injectable weight loss medications known as GLP-1s, however, they also act on another hormone pathway called gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) which promotes fat loss and blocks fat gain, in addition to the effects on insulin and sugar metabolism.

By combining the effects of GLP-1 and GIP together, this medication is more effective at promoting weight loss through reduced appetite, as well as directly on the pathways that lead to fat loss.

Medication regimenStarting Wegovy is a step-by-step process. You begin with a small dose of 0.25mg once a week for the first four weeks. Then, every four weeks, the dose is increased gradually until you reach the maintenance dose of 2.4mg weekly. This gradual increase helps your body adapt to the medication comfortably.Mounjaro's dosage is designed to increase gradually, starting at 2.5mg weekly for the initial four weeks. The dose then goes up in 2.5mg steps every four weeks. Depending on how your body responds, a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg, or 15mg may be appropriate.
Common side effectsLike all medications, Wegovy and Mounjaro can cause side effects, though they are usually mild and temporary. Common side effects might include feeling a bit nauseous, experiencing loose stools, or sometimes vomiting, especially when you first start the medication.

Does Mounjaro have side effects?

Mounjaro, like any medication, can cause side effects. Most people only experience mild and short-term effects like decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain. These side effects typically improve as your body adjusts to the medication.

Our clinicians will make sure you get all the information you need on the possible side effects, and support you through your journey. For more detailed information you can also refer to the patient information leaflet included in your Mounjaro medication box.

What happens when I stop the medication?

expand iconshrink icon

Medication alone can help you lose weight, but it will not help you keep it off. That is why we pair medication with ongoing support, to help you make long term changes to your habits that will help you keep the weight off after you stop the medication.
